Fishing Knots Every Angler Should Know
Most fish are not lost to broken rods or screaming drags. They are lost at a knot, usually one tied in thirty seconds with cold fingers, in fading light, by an angler who learned it once from a diagram and never tested it. Independent line-testing labs and tackle manufacturers such as Berkley have pulled thousands of knots on calibrated machines, and the results are sobering: the same knot, tied well or tied badly, can vary between 95 percent and 55 percent of the line's rated breaking strain. The good news is that eight knots cover practically every situation in fresh and salt water, and every one of them can be learned in an evening at the kitchen table.
The improved clinch: the gateway knot
The improved clinch is the first knot most anglers ever learn, and it remains a fine choice for tying monofilament up to about 12 lb test to hooks, swivels and lures. Tied carefully — five turns, moistened before cinching — it tests at roughly 85 to 95 percent of line strength. Its weakness is well documented: on slippery braided lines and on heavy mono above 20 lb it can slip under steady pressure, the tag end creeping back through the wraps until the knot simply unravels. If you fish braid, do not trust the clinch. If you fish heavy fluorocarbon leaders for pike or saltwater species, reduce the turns to four so the knot seats fully, or move to a uni knot instead.
The Palomar: braid's best friend
The Palomar knot is the standard recommendation from braid manufacturers for good reason. The doubled line passes through the hook eye, ties a simple overhand, and the loop drops over the hook before tightening. Because the line bears on itself in a doubled configuration, the Palomar regularly tests at 95 percent or better, even on slick eight-carrier braids. Its failure mode is operator error: if the two strands cross inside the knot rather than lying parallel, strength drops sharply. The other limitation is practical — passing a loop over a large lure with three treble hooks is awkward, which is why many lure anglers reserve the Palomar for jig heads, hooks and swivels and use a loop knot for hardbaits.
The uni knot: one knot, many jobs
If you could keep only one knot, many guides would tell you to keep the uni. It ties line to hooks, joins two lines as a double uni, snells hooks and even secures line to a reel spool. Strength runs around 90 percent on mono and fluorocarbon with six turns, slightly less on braid unless you double the line first. The uni's quiet advantage is that it cinches down in a controlled slide, so you can leave a small loop above a jig for freer action and let the knot slide closed under load. Its main failure point is too few wraps on thin braid; eight turns is the safe minimum there.
The double uni and the FG: joining braid to leader
Almost every modern setup pairs braided main line with a fluorocarbon or monofilament leader, and the connection between them is where most break-offs happen. The double uni is the forgiving option: two uni knots tied back to back and slid together, testing around 80 to 85 percent and very tolerant of imperfect tying. The FG knot is the high-performance option. It weaves the braid around the leader in dozens of alternating wraps, creating a slim friction grip that passes through rod guides almost silently and tests close to 100 percent of the braid's strength. Its catch is that it must be tied with steady tension — tied loose, it slips on the first hard cast, often launching an expensive lure toward the horizon. Practice the FG at home twenty times before you trust it on the water.
The blood knot and surgeon's knot: line to line in a hurry
Fly anglers and match anglers still rely on the blood knot to join two monofilament sections of similar diameter, such as tapering a leader from 0.25 mm down to 0.18 mm. Tied with five turns on each side it tests around 80 to 90 percent and lies beautifully straight. It is, however, fiddly with cold hands and nearly impossible with lines of very different diameters. The triple surgeon's knot is the blunt instrument that solves both problems: three overhand passes with both lines together, done in fifteen seconds even in rain, at a small cost in bulk. On a windy bank in November, the surgeon's knot is worth more than any elegant alternative.
The non-slip loop knot: action for lures and flies
A snug knot pins a lure's nose and dampens its action. The non-slip loop knot, often called the Kreh loop after the late American fly-fishing writer Lefty Kreh, leaves a fixed loop that lets streamers, jerkbaits and soft plastics swing freely. It tests around 85 to 90 percent in fluorocarbon leaders, dramatically better than the old Rapala knot in heavy line. Failure comes from sizing the loop too large, where it can catch the hook point on the cast, or from tying it in fine braid, where the overhand foundation can cut into itself. Keep it for leaders of 8 lb and up and it will serve you for everything from sea trout flies to topwater plugs.
The snell: when the angle of pull matters
The snell knot wraps the line around the hook shank rather than the eye, aligning the pull directly with the hook point. Carp anglers tying hair rigs and catfish anglers fishing circle hooks use it because it converts pressure into a rolling hook-set, increasing hookups noticeably with circle patterns. Strength is excellent, frequently above 90 percent, because the load spreads across many wraps on the shank. The snell fails mostly through misuse: snelling an upturned-eye hook from the wrong side changes the geometry and can actually push the point away from the fish.
The arbor knot and the habit that matters more than any knot
The arbor knot — a uni-style slip knot around the spool — exists for one humble job: keeping your line attached to the reel if a big fish ever takes you to the bottom of the spool. It will probably never be tested, but the one day it is, you will be glad it is there. More important than any single knot is the testing habit: after tying, grip the hook safely and pull hard, harder than feels polite. A knot that fails in your hands just saved you the fish of the season. Wet every knot before cinching, trim tags to about 3 mm, and retie after every significant fish or snag. Line is the cheapest part of fishing; lost fish are the most expensive.
