Greece is a country of extraordinary fishing geography. The dentex (Dentex dentex) is the prize species — a silver, blue-tinged fish with powerful jaws that can exceed 6 kilograms in the Aegean. It favours depths of 20 to 50 metres around rocky prominences and feeds aggressively on smaller fish and cephalopods. Charter fishing from Volos, Kavala, or Alexandroupolis provides access to offshore rocky grounds where dentex to 4 kilograms are regularly encountered.
Sporades Islands — Underwater Topography for Grouper
The Sporades island group (Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonnisos, and Skyros) in the northern Aegean sits within the National Marine Park of Alonnisos Northern Sporades — the largest marine protected area in the Mediterranean. While fishing within the strict protection zones is prohibited, the buffer zones outside them support excellent populations of dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus). Grouper to 10 kilograms are taken by jigging over steep rocky walls in depths of 30 to 60 metres. The Ionian Sea on Greece's western coast is calmer and slightly deeper than the Aegean, and its fishing offers amberjack (Seriola dumerili) alongside the Aegean mainstays. The amberjack is a pelagic predator capable of exceeding 50 kilograms, though fish of 8 to 15 kilograms are the typical sporting target. Vertical jigging with heavy metal lures around underwater pinnacles in the Ionian produces amberjack throughout summer. The town of Lefkada serves as a useful base for both Ionian boat fishing and the surrounding island waters of Lefkada island itself.
Prespa Lakes — Freshwater Eel and Trout
Lake Megali Prespa (Greater Prespa) sits at 853 metres on the triple border of Greece, Albania, and North Macedonia. The Greek village of Agios Germanos on the shore of the smaller Mikri Prespa serves as the main base. The floating wooden fishermen's huts — traditional palafittes — on Mikri Prespa are a UNESCO-recognised cultural feature and the most photographed sight in the area. In its headwaters near Siatista and Kastoria, the river holds wild brown trout in cold, clear water fed by limestone springs. The section above the Polyfytos Reservoir is the prime trout water; the reservoir itself holds excellent perch and pike in a very large volume. Fly fishing with local patterns imitating the abundant Ephemera danica mayfly produces results from late April through June. Access requires a permit from the local fishing club in Kozani.
Evros River — Giant Catfish and Carp
The Evros (Maritsa in Bulgarian, Meriç in Turkish) forms the northeast border of Greece with Turkey and flows into the Aegean at Alexandroupolis. In its lower reaches this is big, slow, fertile river country holding wels catfish over 80 kilograms in the deep pools — a legitimate target for specialist cat anglers. Large common carp and bream also populate the slower sections. The Evros Delta Nature Reserve at the river mouth is a Ramsar wetland; boat access from Alexandroupolis allows fishing in non-protected sections.
Rhodes and Dodecanese — Southern Aegean Reef Fishing
Rhodes and the surrounding Dodecanese islands offer excellent year-round fishing in the warm southern Aegean. Bottom fishing from boats around the rocky headlands of Rhodes — particularly at Cape Prasonisi and the southwest coast — produces sea bream, red mullet, and occasional large dentex. Fishing charters from Mandraki Harbour in Rhodes Town run from April through November. The water remains warm enough for comfortable boat fishing even in December, when northern Greece is cold.

The lake is a significant freshwater resource and supports traditional fishing communities around its shores. Boat fishing is the most effective approach for carp; the southern shore accessible from Agrinio has established fishing points with road access. Best carp sport is from May through September.
Vikos Gorge Area — Voidomatis River Trout
The Voidomatis River in the Epirus region rises from a karst spring at the foot of Vikos Gorge — one of the world's deepest gorges at 900 metres — and the springs maintain the river at 10°C even in August.
