Moldova is a small, largely agricultural country between Romania and Ukraine, and its rivers define both its borders and its character. The Prut runs the entire western frontier with Romania, and the Dniester — the Nistru in Moldovan — forms the backbone of the country before winding into Ukraine and the Black Sea. Neither river is famous beyond eastern Europe, but both hold populations of fish that European coarse anglers and predator specialists would travel far to target. Dniester at Soroca — Asp Fishing
Soroca sits on the Dniester 160 kilometres north of Chișinău, and the river here is wide, relatively fast, and stocked with the asp (Aspius aspius) — a torpedo-shaped cyprinid predator that attacks baitfish on the surface with explosive violence. Asp in the Dniester reach 4 to 5 kilograms, and surface lure fishing in June and July when the river is warm and flowing at medium level produces spectacular sport. Casting large surface minnow lures across the current and retrieving at speed triggers savage strikes. Local anglers know the asp season intimately; the fish move upriver in spring and concentrate in runs below riffles.
Dubasari Reservoir — Pike Records
The Dubasari Reservoir on the Dniester in the Transnistria region has a reputation for producing exceptional pike. The reservoir is 128 kilometres long and covers 67 square kilometres, and its slow-moving, weedy arms provide ideal pike habitat. Fish over 10 kilograms are common, and specimen hunters targeting the deepest channels with large dead-baits in winter have recorded fish over 15 kilograms. The political situation in Transnistria is complex — this region operates as a de facto independent state — but fishing access is generally unimpeded for foreign visitors crossing from Moldova proper. Prut River — Pike-Perch and Catfish
The Prut forms the entire western border of Moldova with Romania for 695 kilometres. In its middle reach between Ungheni and Cahul, the river holds superb pike-perch (Sander lucioperca) in the deeper holes and along the outer bends. Pike-perch to 6 kilograms are taken on jig heads with soft plastic lures worked slowly along the bottom. The river also holds substantial wels catfish (Silurus glanis); fish over 60 kilograms have been reported from the deeper pools near Cahul. Catfish are typically targeted at night using large deadbaits anchored on the bottom or live-baited carp.
Iazul Cucoanei — Managed Carp Lake
Iazul Cucoanei is one of Moldova's better-known managed fishing lakes, offering carp fishing in a pleasant rural setting in central Moldova. The lake holds commons and mirrors in the 5 to 12 kilogram range, and the density of fish makes for consistent sport even during the heat of a Moldovan summer when river levels drop. Boilies and hair-rigged corn produce reliably; the banks are well-maintained with designated swim areas. Day and night fishing is permitted with a paid permit from the site management.
Dniester at Vadul lui Vodă — Recreational Fishing Close to Chișinău
The Vadul lui Vodă recreation area 20 kilometres north of Chișinău on the Dniester is Moldova's most popular leisure destination, combining beaches, river swimming, and fishing. The river here holds bream, roach, perch, and pike-perch accessible from the shore. Long-distance ledgering for bream produces best results in spring and autumn; summer surface fishing for asp and chub is entertaining and requires only light tackle. Nistru (Dniester) Delta — Carp and Bream in Backwaters
Near Palanca in southern Moldova, where the Dniester approaches its Ukrainian delta, the river breaks into a series of backwaters and oxbow lakes that provide sheltered coarse fishing conditions. These oxbows hold enormous shoals of bream averaging 1.5 to 2 kilograms, plus carp to double figures. The backwaters are accessible by minor road from Palanca and are at their best in May and June when the spring flood has receded and the fish are actively feeding in the newly inundated margins.
Cogâlnic River — Small Stream Perch and Ruffe
The Cogâlnic is a minor river in southern Moldova that flows into the Sasyk Lagoon in Ukraine. In its Moldovan section near Hîncești, the river supports populations of perch, ruffe, and small pike. It is primarily a recreational day-trip fishery for anglers from Chișinău — the drive takes around 45 minutes — and light float tackle with maggots is the dominant approach. The river is shallow and easy to wade in summer.
Stânca-Costești Reservoir — Border Lake Fishing
The Stânca-Costești Reservoir on the Prut straddles the Romanian–Moldovan border upstream of Ungheni. Access from the Moldovan side is near the village of Costești. The reservoir holds the same species as the Prut itself — pike-perch, bream, roach, and catfish — in a large, manageable lake setting. The Romanian side is more developed for fishing tourism, with established swims and boat-hire facilities; the Moldovan side is quieter and cheaper.
